The Swiss issue a $290,000 speeding ticket
Posted by Ilia Lou on January 9th, 2010 at 11:46 am

An unnamed driver of a Ferrari Testarossa was fined $290,000 for speeding in Switzerland. The driver was going 35 mph over the speed limit of 50, and because of his wealth, he was given a record breaking speeding fine. Even with his $20+ million however, $290k seems a bit steep, it’s over double the last record breaking fine of $107k.
The court clerk stated that the driver can appeal this decision, so we’ll see later on what happens with that.

New 2012 Model S from Tesla, a practical electric car that seats 7
Posted by Ilia Lou on January 2nd, 2010 at 2:42 pm

Well, I have to admit, before the Model S I didn’t have much hope for the electric car. Yes, the Roadster sport did 0-60 in 3.7 seconds and no one is denying that it was very quick indeed, but the fact that it was hopelessly impractical to live with, and that the charging would take forever turned me away. Now however, this Model S might just prove me wrong.
This new Tesla will have 4 doors, a big trunk for your belongings, and it looks astonishingly good. If anything the technical stuff is even more impressive, 0-62 happens in just 5.6 seconds, and the maximum range is 300 miles. A 45 minute “QuickCharge” as well as a 5 minute battery swap should ensure that you won’t run out of electricity all the time.

Volvo has pulled out a new concept model of the S60, which is suppose to be faster, better looking, and safer then the normal S60. However they don’t put too much of a spot light on speed, most of it is on safety. This car will feature electronic aids such as adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and collision warning with full auto brake. The engine is nothing special, it’s a 1.6L 180 horsepower high efficiency engine, which was designed to be economical and environmentally friendly.
Here’s something a bit more interesting though, Volvo has teamed up with SIMBIN development team to create, “Volvo the game”. It’s basically a simulator where you drive the S60 around a track, and the download is free.

A Mercedes 240D that has driven 2.8 mil Kms earns a spot at the Mercedes Museum
Posted by Ilia Lou on December 28th, 2009 at 1:26 pm

A Greek taxi driver and the owner of the car, Gregorios Sachinides, says the miles have been clocked up thanks to his job as a cab driver. He used work in Greece’s second largest city, Thessaloniki. This historical 240D also played a role in the Balkans war, by making hundreds of trips transporting medical supplies.
Basically, this Merc packs as much history as a WWII fighter plane, except the plane never broke a record for the longest amount miles ever clocked up, and the 240D did.
As mentioned before, this amazing vehicle will be preserved at the Mercedes museum in Germany, so if really want to see a car that’s driven the equivalent distance of driving to and back from the moon six times, then that’s where you should head.

Detroit Auto Show – Chrysler will bring out new Fiat 500 models
Posted by Ilia Lou on December 23rd, 2009 at 4:21 pm

You herd right, Chrysler believes the quick and nimble Fiat 500 can be improved by having it fit with an electric motor. In fact, Chrysler will use it’s stand at the Detroit auto show to present multiple of it’s 500 models, like the 500 Abarth and the 500C Convertible. If you like what you see, then you’ll have to wait until 2011 for these cars to arrive at Chrysler showrooms.
However, a bunch of small Fiats isn’t exactly something I’m looking forward to. Luckily, Ferrari is going to show up with it’s 458 Italia, and Maserati will be there with it’s new GranCabrio.
